Potential Therapeutic Properties of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells
The ability of embryonic stem cells (ESCs), induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), and multipotent cells from fetal and adult tissue to differentiate into a wide range of functional cell types is revolutionising medicine with the hope that such stem cell-derived cells could replace those damaged in patients with various severe medical conditions. Professor Leo A. Behie and his team at University of Calgary look into why ESCs and iPSCs retain tremendous potential for differentiation; however, the use of cell transplantation derived from these immortal cells in patients is still severely limited.
