Clinical development of type 2 diabetes drugs has recently resulted in a number of new medications available to patients. Still, more progress appears to be on the horizon in the years ahead. Increasingly, multidrug therapy in type 2 diabetics has become more common using a combination of agents with different but complementary mechanisms. Hans-Peter Guler at INC Research discusses that despite all the new treatments that have emerged in the last 20 years, diabetes sufferers remain challenged in effectively managing their disease over the long term, and some drugs lose efficacy as the disease progresses.
